Skill Building: A Journey, Not a Sprint

Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are skills.

With all the buzz around skill development, we often expect instant results when we enroll in a skill development course, thinking that it will fast-track our journey from amateur to expert. However, let’s shed some light on this process and explore the reality of the journey.

As the saying goes, “Catch them young,” “Start early”—this is especially true when it comes to mastering a skill, whether it’s coding, art, writing, sports, public speaking, or anything else. Giving children a structured learning experience, while allowing their creativity and thinking to evolve naturally, is key to their organic growth. When a 7-year-old begins a beginner’s course, it’s important to let her enjoy learning the concepts without rushing to reach some future goal.

Each child has a unique learning curve, and it’s essential to recognize this. Having been in this field for a considerable amount of time, I can confidently say that consistency and regularity, with concepts taught at the child’s pace, can yield remarkable results in the long run. A toddler introduced to swimming might fear the water for years, but with consistent exposure and without being pushed too hard, she will eventually swim confidently. As guardians, teachers, and parents, it’s our responsibility to ensure children are given the time they need to progress—without undue pressure or excessive breaks. The right amount of encouragement involves instilling values like consistency, punctuality, and persistence in acquiring the right skill set.

With all the excitement about AI, the skills that will continue to distinguish humans are those instilled by parents and teachers: diligence, creativity, thoughtfulness, resilience, consistency, curiosity, and the ability to analyze and solve problems. It is our duty as their mentors to provide this generation with the right blend of soft and technical skills to help them navigate the challenges of the future.

Happy Learning
